A short story by surgeon and author Richard Selzer, Whither Thou Goest tells the tale of Hannah, a woman whose husband died tragically, suddenly, and young. On life support for an extended time, a doctor approaches her and asks about organ donation. What follows is the story of Hannah's correspondence with the recipient of her late husband's heart, and subsequent efforts to listen to the heart that 'lives on'. The story brings up many questions about complicated grief, organ donation, 'dead is dead' and what does that mean?, medical language, and more. What questions does the story bring up for you? Many thanks to group member Sherry Medwin for sharing this story!
