Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was one universal statement that could be made in all situations that demonstrated compassion, support, care, and concern? Sadly, there is no such thing. I can think of a handful of times when my foot has gone straight to my mouth after saying something that was only well-intentioned but clearly landed in exactly the wrong way when trying to provide support and comfort to someone who had received bad news or was going through a difficult time. It can be helpful to consider things that people have said or done that are UNhelpful in determining what to say or do to show support. Every situation is totally different, every person and circumstance might call for different action and words. What are some things you have found to be helpful or unhelpful to you? Here are some ideas you might find helpful. Tell us what YOU think!
