About the Event

Most adults with a serious illness have experienced something difficult before that has called on their strengths and, by having gotten through something, they have come out even stronger, more resilient than before. You have found yourself in unfavorable conditions, and yet you are here. Humans can survive and even thrive in the harshest of conditions. What makes that possible?

When we want to provide support to someone who is going through a challenging times, it is helpful to review their coping strategies and strengths, not just to learn about them, but to remind them of the strengths that they already have. Resilience is our ability to bounce back after a setback of some kind, but it does not require heroic measures. According to one team of researchers, there are four elements of resilience: confidence, social support, adaptability, and purposefulness (Cooper, C. L., Flint-Taylor, J., & Pearn, M. (2013). Building resilience for success: A resource for managers and organizations (Vol. 8). Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan). This week, we examine our own resiliency and its elements, our strengths, and where we have room to fortify ourselves for future challenges. What has helped you get through difficult times before? What can you call on now? What does your resilience tell you about your strengths? How can you draw from this concept and its elements when supporting others? Please bring paper and a pen.

Register for an optional resiliency quiz and the Zoom link to join.
