Before we begin...

In Palliative Care, one of the most important things we can bring into a conversation is humility. We might think we ‘know’ a patient and their needs based on their chart, but it turns out, the moment we enter the room we might immediately realize that we had it totally wrong. You may have experienced this with yourself or those you (think you) know. Before we begin a conversation or offer support, it's important to take a moment: what are we working with here? What's the environment we are walking into, what are the tools we need and have, and what do we need to learn more about before we get our hands dirty?

It is helpful to consider: readiness for conversation, do we have their permission to ask questions, are they open to support, what is their relationship to receiving help and asking for it, do they prefer privacy over anything else, who do they want with them during a conversation, and more. What do we need to know or ask before we launch?

What gets in the way of helping the people you love? What gets in the way of allowing others to help and support you? What do you assume you know about someone whom you'd like to help, but maybe just need to ask? It turns out offering help and asking for help isn’t always so simple. So what can we consider before getting started? This week, we put it all on the table. Please bring paper, a pen, and your own experiences.
