In yesterday's NYTimes paper, there was an article https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/31/science/donor-bodies-medical-school-appreciation.html?smid=url-share about donating one's body to science. We've discussed this before in Sunset Circle and my feelings at the time were ones of dismissal. I conjured up visions of med students sniggering at my scars, wrinkled abdomen and other bodily imperfections. Vanity? Sure. Should I care? Reading this article helps.
It corrects my erroneous visions. This is the med student's 'First Patient'and provides the med student with lessons in ethics and professionalism. Not only that, but many medical schools have appreciation ceremonies where the donor is honored for his selfless donation to the betterment of education and furthering of science; the family is recognized with gratitude as well.
If you have time, read this article and see if it sways you at all. My personal jury is still out, but the debate has shifted.
What about you? I'd love to hear about your thoughts.
