About the Event

Dr. Ira Byock, a renowned palliative care physician, noticed common threads in his work with people at the end of life. He sums them up in his book "The Four Things That Matter Most". Each one is a statement we can claim in connection with another. This week, we focus on the first one: "Please forgive me".

What does it mean when we ask for forgiveness and move towards making amends? What emotions surround this request? Shame? Embarassment? Regret? We might also feel courage, humility and self-respect. How is "I'm sorry" different from "Please forgive me", and how is that different from "making amends"? This week, we focus on all of these, but mostly on making amends as an actionable process. Making amends requires action that goes behind and beyond the words: it requires authenticity, humility, repair and honesty. Step 9 of the Twelve Steps, some may be familiar with what it means to make amends, and all are invited to share their experiences they have had that touch on this process.

We've all done things we aren't proud of. As we discuss various elements of the process of making amends, you might notice regret creep in. Is there an opportunity in your life to make amends with someone? How does making amends mitigate regret?
