About the Event

Dr. Ira Byock, a renowned palliative care physician, noticed common threads in his work with people at the end of life. He sums them up in his book "The Four Things That Matter Most". Each one is a statement we can claim in connection with another. This week, we focus on the second one: "I forgive you".

Oooooo when people hurt us.... it hurts. The experience of being wronged can bring up all kinds of things. Perhaps it makes us feel powerless. Or perhaps it makes us feel powerful, like we are the ones who get to decide what to do from here. Or maybe the response is rage, or tears, or... whatever it is, it's all human. Is it possible to forgive too easily or readily? Is refusing to forgive stubborn or indulgent?

This week we talk about forgiving others who have wronged us. Whether we do this in response to being asked to forgive or from a distance, when the other has nothing to do with the process, there is a lightening, a lifting that is there, waiting for us.  And let's be clear: forgiving doesn't necessarily mean forgetting. Letting go does not mean spending all of our energy pushing away. So... what does it mean to you? Forgiveness is a great example of the practice of non-attachment, discussed in September.
