We live in a culture that fiercely values independence and doing things on our own. Taken to an extreme, it can become very difficult to ask for help or support, or even company. We are not just social creatures, but we are also not meant to do EVERYthing ALL on our own, at least if we want to do it well- it’s just not possible. So how do we strike a balance?

Certain circumstances can make it exceptionally difficult to manage completely on our own: illness, injury, or major life changes. Particularly in the aging process, solitude and independence can be challenged as mobility, finances, and needs change. Recall from previous discussions that aloneness can lead to loneliness, but no matter one's social or living situation, one can feel alone and lonely.
