Memory Keepers

Memory is a fascinating, complex ability and concept. What is the experience of remembering like for you? What do we remember and why? What role does choice have in the matter? How do painful memories serve us? In the young adult book The Giver by Lois Lawry, a futuristic community exists wherein, in an effort to eliminate all painful memories, members had to give up all collective memories. One person’s role in the community was the Receiver, who held the community’s memories. What happens when we eliminate all painful experiences from our memories? What if, in this community, you were allowed to keep just a handful of memories, good or bad, to have with you for this lifetime? What memories would you keep in your pocket? Why?
